IRSA Workshop Introduces K-12 Students to Data Visualization
A free online workshop on March 21, 2026 introduced K-12 schools to effective data visualization, ahead of the Minnesota K-12 Data Visualization Poster Competition.
On March 21, 2026, IRSA held a free two-hour online workshop on data visualization for K-12 schools, as part of the 2026 Minnesota K-12 Data Visualization Poster Competition. The morning opened with an information session on the competition.
Instructor Pedro Cosatto, a PhD student in the School of Statistics and a consultant at the Lynn Y. S. Lin Statistical Consulting Center, showed how to match a research question with the right chart and how to visualize single variables, relationships and several variables at once. He also walked through real examples of good and poor visualizations, including what the competition judges look for. In the second half, participants created the same plots in R with a real dataset.
